During the R1 year, no night or evening call is taken. At the end of the R1 year, a few "buddy calls" are taken in preparation for R2 year. Major holidays are excused.
At least weekly, R1s are excused from their duties to attend a yearlong physics course, taught in the hospital, by the medical physicists.
